Senior Capstones

Senior Capstones are projects that allow seniors to synthesize the academic, CTE, and 21st century skills they have learned throughout the years of their education, applying them to real-world, meaningful problems or leadership positions as a means of bridging the gap between schooling and post-secondary options.
The process is both experiential and reflective. It involves numerous adults as guides (mentor, advisor, teacher, parent). It provides an opportunity for closure while transitioning to the next phase of learning and life.

Junior Service Learning
During fall semester, all juniors will work with their peers and community partners to apply the concepts of service learning to a real-world problem. Students will conduct a needs assessment to find an issue, determine what skills and talents they possess that could be used to address that community need, collaborate with a community agency to develop a plan of action with a measurable outcome, and implement a project to completion. Students will present their work and its impact to a panel of their peers and community members. This project will assist students in understanding and preparing for the Senior Capstone.
Examples of past junior projects include:

  • Starting an after-school tutoring program at a nearby elementary school
  • Preparing and serving a holiday meal at a local agency that supports families of sick children
  • Conducting a drive for used bicycles, fixing them, and donating them for the holidays
  • Presenting lessons, tips, and activities for healthy eating to local elementary students
  • Developing a video on the dangers of texting while driving for use by local safety agencies
