North Valleys Graduate Achieves Perfect K-12 Attendance
Student: Schyler Rullman
School: North Valleys
Schyler Rullman, 18, a senior at North Valleys High School, has never missed a day of school – ever. In June, he intends to graduate from the Washoe County School District without a blemish on his attendance record.
As a youngster visiting his grandmother in Iowa, Schyler read the story of a student who was recognized in a newspaper for achieving perfect attendance. He decided right then to make it a lifelong goal to never miss a day of school and accomplish what few students ever do for one very simple reason.
“I decided to make that goal because I saw someone in the newspaper who had done it and I thought it would be cool to make it into the newspaper,” Schyler said.
From the time he read the story of the student who made perfect attendance, he took extra care every day to ensure he didn’t miss class. His family, originally from Santa Rosa, Calif., made alternative arrangements when an appointment intruded on his school time. When Schyler needed to see the doctor or dentist, he always asked his mother to arrange his schedule so that he could be counted for daily attendance. He once refused to let his mother take him out of school for a day of fun just so he could stay in school and keep his record untarnished.
“If I’d feel sick in class, I’d go to the nurse’s office,” Schyler said. “They’d say, ‘Do you want to go home?’ I’d say, ‘No.’ ”
His parents, Al and Beverly, are impressed by his dedication to staying in school.
“It’s a hard feat that even I couldn’t do,” Al said.
“He’s a determined kid,” Beverly added.
Schyler takes a practical view on his accomplishment, noting that even he gets the occasional urge to blow off his homework. Even so, he quickly realizes why it’s good to take care of it the first time around.
“I figure if you have to do it, why miss school and then do twice as much later when you can get it done now?” Schyler said. “I still get lazy sometimes. I’ll miss an assignment every now and then, but I’ll make it up and turn it in. Everybody gets lazy now and then.”
Schyler has maintained a 2.8 GPA and plays for North Valleys’ baseball team as a first baseman. He plans to attend Great Basin College in Elko to study mining and engineering. He will start college at Great Basin and plans to transfer to the University of Nevada, Reno.
According to him, the only time he has missed class was to leave early to play a game with his team.
His own North Valleys counselor Joani Charlebois and Principal Jeana Curtis are surprised that Schyler’s achievement has gone unnoticed until now. Curtis and Charlebois say Schyler’s determination to achieve his goal sets a positive example for all students.
Charlebois said she was amazed when she found out about Schyler’s record while looking up his information on Infinite Campus, the District’s student information system, on an unrelated issue.
“I thought there must be something wrong with Infinite Campus because his attendance page was completely blank, not even a tardy mark on it,” Charlebois said. “I said, ‘Schyler, do you know you haven’t missed a day this year?’ He says, ‘Yeah.’ I have never seen an attendance record that blank.”
