Nine Washoe County School Choirs to Appear on PBS Reno, NV (March 1, 2011) - A repertoire of talents from eight Washoe County high schools and middle schools will be on display on PBS on Thursday, March 3 after being selected among America's finest young musicians for the televised series Celebrate America! Students from Reed, Reno, Sparks, North Valleys and Galena high schools and Depoali, Swope, Billinghurst and Cold Springs middle schools were taped with renowned composer and conductor Tim Janis in October 2010 for the program. Each school performed its own selection, which Janis described as uplifting. "I was impressed with all the schools," Janis said of the Northern Nevada schools. "I was thrilled to work with them. As I've worked across the country, I've found so much undiscovered talent in Northern Nevada and that is a testament to how much that musical skill needs to be demonstrated to the public and to make this program available." Two other Northern Nevada schools also were chosen, including Virginia City High School in Storey County and Spring Creek High School near Elko. Janis, who attended military high school in his youth, said working with more than 15,000 students for Celebrate America! is a form of community service in his eyes. "I'm very patriotic," he said. "Celebrate America! is about songs that make us grateful for everything that's good. Music is my whole life." Janis works with a school coordinator who researches different schools across the nation, contacts teachers and works with school choirs' schedules. Janis recorded all 10 northern Nevada choirs in the course of one day, giving each choir three chances to record their music. Celebrate America! When: Thursday, March 3 at 8 p.m. Where: KNPB Public Television Note: Highlights and video clips from past Celebrate America! broadcasts and additional information can be found at www.timjanis.com
