Safe and Sober Foundation Scrapbooks for Students
Reno, NV (March 11, 2011) - As graduation season nears and seniors contemplate their celebrations, the Safe and Sober Foundation is seeking to raise money to keep those activities safe and fun.
The foundation is holding an all-day fundraiser on Saturday, March 12 at the Grand Sierra Resort to offer the community a few hours of scrapbooking enjoyment while getting the word about what Washoe County Safe and Sober is all about. The event will generate funds through registration fees, a silent auction and raffles.
"It's the end of an era for the students because they're leaving high school and going on to college," said Safe and Sober president Susan Koonce. "They've gone through 12 years of all this with their schools. This celebration is an important part of their lives and they've made it and deserve to have a safe evening."
Money raised by the foundation goes to 10 participating Washoe County high schools and Bishop Manogue High School so the sites can provide safe environments on graduation night. Because of this program, Koonce said, there has not been a grad night fatality in Washoe County since 1996.
Participants at Saturday's fundraiser are encouraged to bring and work on their own projects and materials, although several vendors will be available to sell supplies as needed. Those who attend are asked to pay a $25 registration fee. The event will feature a silent auction. Raffle tickets will sell for $1 each or six for $5.
In 2010, more than 64 percent of graduating students attended their school's event. The funds raised for the event help lower ticket prices for all students and provide scholarship tickets to those who would be unable to attend otherwise.
