Deputy Superintendent Martinez to Leave WCSD

Reno, NV (April 15, 2011) - The Washoe County School District announced today Deputy Superintendent Pedro Martinez has accepted a position with the Clark County School District as Deputy Superintendent of Instruction. Martinez will continue his duties with WCSD until May 10, 2011.

"I am sad to see Pedro leave WCSD; however, I am excited to see his leadership and talents stay in the state of Nevada," Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison said. "We were fortunate to have Pedro join our team over a year and a half ago and he has done great work for WSCD. I know he will continue to have success in Clark County School District (CCSD)."

Martinez said his decision was not an easy one, but he is excited for the opportunity in Southern Nevada. "Working with Superintendent Morrison and the WCSD Board of Trustees has been a wonderful experience. The Washoe County community is very special and I have made many friends and colleagues. While this decision was very difficult, I have been provided with the opportunity to make a difference for an even greater number of children in a large urban school district. I am excited by Superintendent Dwight Jones' vision, and my experience in both Chicago Public Schools and WCSD means I have the right skills for this role."

Martinez's position with WCSD will not immediately be filled until the District knows the final budget situation and the level of K-12 funding coming out of the legislative session in Carson City.

As Deputy Superintendent for WCSD, among his many accomplishments, Martinez took a lead in the development and implementation of the District's strategic plan, Envision WCSD 2015 - Investing in Our Future.

WCSD Board President Barbara McLaury wished Martinez the best on his new journey. "The WCSD Board of Trustees greatly appreciates the expertise that Deputy Superintendent Martinez has brought to our school system. We wish him well as he embarks on his new position in CCSD."

In his new role with CCSD, Martinez will oversee the school district's 357 schools as well as the curriculum and professional development departments.

While Martinez will be moving hundreds of miles away from Washoe County, both he and Morrison are looking forward to continued collaboration as Nevada and its two largest school districts continue to move forward with education reform to better prepare all children for college and the careers of tomorrow.

"Dwight Jones, the new superintendent in Clark County School District, has been very complementary of the reforms that have occurred in WCSD. His excitement about Pedro joining his team is that they will be able to incorporate many initiatives, reforms and ideas that we have started in Washoe County School District," Morrison said. "This will give us the opportunity to have a better cooperation and collaboration between the two school districts here in Nevada for the benefit of all our students."

Martinez agreed, saying, "I plan to stay in touch and collaborate with Superintendent Morrison to change the face of education in this great state of Nevada."

Editor's Note: Pedro Martinez is available for interviews on Friday, April 15 at 1:30 p.m. (PST) in the Washoe County School District Board Room, located at 425 E. Ninth St. in Reno, to accommodate media affiliates in that area. The onsite contact is WCSD Communications Director Irene Payne at (775) 224-6991.
