Nevada Author Gives Students an Appreciation for Reading

Reno, NV (April 19, 2011) - Two reading assemblies on Wednesday, April 20 will focus on motivating students from Mariposa Dual Language Academy and Smithridge Elementary School to foster a love for reading at an early age.

The assemblies will feature Nevada children's book author Kevin Janison, creator of the Deputy Dorkface series, who will offer an interactive presentation for students. In addition to a reading, he will discuss the book publication process, including a book's inception, a PowerPoint presentation on writing and editing, test audiences, the illustration process from sketch to what actually appears in the book and a test of students' observations on what was changed. Janison also will touch on the production process and finally, for students at an intermediate level, he will help students in an exercise in which they create their own book based on "untruthful" stories they've told their parents.

WCSD Trustee Estela Gutierrez said she and her fellow Board members are appreciative of Janison's involvement with the assemblies.

"We are grateful that the children of Mariposa and Smithridge elementary schools will hear firsthand from a Nevada children's author," Gutierrez said. "Mr. Janison will not only read to the children but also demonstrate his writing and editing process. It's important to help our children develop a love for learning; it's a skill and passion that can stay with them for all of their life."
