Board of Trustees Considers Key Proposals for Improving Education
Reno, NV (May 23, 2011) - The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees on Tuesday will weigh in on important initiatives and programs that will have an impact on the District's offering of education for all grade levels if approved.
At their regular meeting, Board members will hear presentations on:
- Expansion of tuition-based full-day kindergarten and pre-kindergarten programs in WCSD
- Enhancements to the Gifted and Talented programs, including exploration of an off-site magnet program to allow students to attend schools outside their zone for special curriculum or an on-site program with other learning opportunities for students
- A discussion to approve the proposed bell schedule changes, which would provide a shift in daily start times at most elementary, middle and high schools
Board members also will approve the final budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year.
In light of the current budget considerations at the Nevada Legislature, Superintendent Heath Morrison said the proposals for these programs and potential changes to students' daily schedules coming to the Board are an important step to show the District's commitment to proving the best possible education for all students.
"We are continually moving forward with our strategic plan, Envision WCSD 2015 - Investing In Our Future, and the programs we are discussing at tomorrow's board meeting are great examples of how we plan to improve the quality of education for all children," Morrison said. "Through our reform efforts, we have made a commitment to look at innovative ways to provide our students with more opportunities so that they are prepared for college and the jobs of tomorrow. I am looking forward to sharing these initiatives with the Board of Trustees."
