Spring Sports Cross the Finish Line

Reno, NV (June 6, 2011) - From the baseball and track fields to indoor pools and fairways across Northern Nevada, student athletes from the District's high schools were well represented in the post-season this spring.

In baseball, the Spanish Springs High School team was crowned 4A Northern Regional Champions and competed in the state finals.

The Cougars head baseball coach, Ben Hofmann, attributes their success this year in large part to strong senior leaders. "We had quality players as well as quality kids. I am so grateful to have been able to coach these guys. I felt we had great chemistry in the dugout and that led to great chemistry on the field."

The Sparks High School baseball team was named champions of the 3A Mount Rose League. In swimming, Reno High School boys and Galena High School girls were both crowned regional champions. The McQueen boys golf team also took home the regional championships.

On the track field, the Incline girls were named the 2A regional and state champions this year. In 4A competition, the McQueen girls were the runners-up in the state meet, and the Reno boys took third place at state. During regionals, Damonte Ranch High School girls tied for the championship as well as the McQueen girls. The McQueen boys track team placed first.

The track coach at McQueen High School, Ed Parise, says the students he coached this year were some of the hardest working kids he's ever had during his coaching career. "The athletes and I are lucky to have such an experienced coaching staff. It would not be possible without the group of coaches we have at McQueen. We are thankful for our accomplishments with three consecutive boys regional titles and two consecutive girls regional titles. However, we will continue to work hard and try to achieve our goals of winning regional and state titles in 2012."

Ken Cass, coordinator of athletics and activities for the District, said, "I'm very proud of our WCSD athletes and coaches, both on the field and in the classroom. Our District was strongly represented on May 25 when the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) recognized the Top 10 student athletes in Northern Nevada and we had seven students in the top 10." Cass continued, "This is an amazing accomplishment for the athletes, their families, their teams and their schools. I appreciate all the dedication and hard work put in by both the athletes and coaches."

The NIAA Northern Nevada Winners for 2010-11 from WCSD included: Gabriella Durante, Sparks High School; Anthony Hascheff, Reno High School; Bryan Jordan, Galena High School; Sara Lancaster, Galena High School; Hayley Medeiros, Reno High School; Ciara O'Driscoll, Damonte Ranch High School and Rollins Stallworth, McQueen High School.

In addition, Incline Highlanders and Reno Huskies captured the NIAA's annual Award of Excellence for 2010-11. The scoring system awards points to schools based on their varsity teams' performances in the classroom, at the athletic venue and in the Citizenship Through Sports (CIT) program. The NIAA considers its Award of Excellence in athletics, academics and citizenship to be its top overall program.
