Book Drive To Help Support Literacy Efforts at Echo Loder Elementary School

Reno, NV (July 12, 2011) - With a mission to build and expand the home libraries of its students, Echo Loder Elementary School is holding a community-wide book drive this Thursday, July 14. The Fill the Truck event is the largest book drive in the school's unique reading campaign called the Just One Campaign.

"We are not only encouraging our children to read more through this campaign, but we also are helping to build their home libraries so they have the tools to continue to improve in reading," Echo Loder Principal Chad Hicks said. "Our goal is ensure every child in our school has 25 books at home and we want to be able to expand their individual libraries by 25 books every year."

During the book drive on July 14, new or gently-used books can be dropped off at the A&W restaurant on the corner of Plumb and Kietzke Lanes.

In addition to expanding the number of books readily available to students at home, the Just One Campaign asks students to commit to reading and encourages dialogue with family members about what they are reading.

Echo Loder Librarian Theresa Shirley, who founded the campaign at Echo Loder, said, "Our students will be asked to do their Just One each night. To complete Just One, our students will read one book or chapter for at least ten minutes with a parent or family member. The goal is to increase literacy and provide opportunities for parents to engage in their child's reading education."

Beginning in August, Echo Loder will also be hosting several "read in" opportunities in which students and their parents can learn more about the campaign and ways to improve literacy.

"With the help of our Just One Campaign partners Rayleen Baker, who owns the A&W, Rick Reviglio and Western Nevada Supply and KOLO Daybreak friends Amanda Sanchez and Stewart Campbell, we hope to have a successful drive so that we can start our 2011-2012 year with many books to begin building the home libraries for each student," Shirley said.
