New Principals Announced for 2011-12 School Year

Reno, NV (August 5, 2011) - Students in nine Washoe County School District schools will be greeted by a new principal during the 2011-12 school year. New principals have already started at Libby Booth and Van Gorder Elementary as more than two dozen elementary schools that operate on the year-round calendar have returned to the classroom. Schools that run on the traditional calendar open on August 29th.

High School students at Wooster and Hug have new leaders. Leah Keuscher was named principal at Wooster High School where she had previously been the assistant principal for three years. Prior to working at Wooster, Keuscher was an assistant principal at Hug High School. She will replace Debra Biersdorff who has been named an area superintendent for Zone 3 at the District.

Lauren Ford will be the new principal at Hug High School, replacing Andy Kelly. Ford was named the WCSD 2011 Middle School Principal of the year and has spent the past several years as the principal of Traner Middle School. Ford will be replaced by Chad Lindeen at Traner this fall. Lindeen spent the last two years as assistant principal at Sparks Middle School.

The other six new principals at the elementary level are:
  • Jenni Anderson will be the next principal at Beck Elementary. She was formerly the assistant principal at Alice Smith.
  • Sara Cunningham will take over at Booth Elementary where she had previously been the assistant principal.
  • Andrew Stansberry is the new principal at Moss Elementary. Stansberry came to Northern Nevada from William C. Abney Academy in Grand Rapids, MI.
  • Derek Cordell is the new principal at Pleasant Valley Elementary coming from Desert Heights Elementary where he had been the assistant principal.
  • Mischelle Bain is the new principal at Westergard Elementary coming from Anchorage, AK where she spent the past 5 years working at both the elementary and middle school levels.
  • Jen Van Tress is the new principal at Van Gorder Elementary where she had previously served as the assistant principal.

Chief School Accountability Officer Paul LaMarca says the nine new principals come from varied backgrounds. "These school leaders include a range of experiences. From experienced veterans within the District, to several first-time principals from our leadership program, plus two from out of state. I look forward to working with each one of these outstanding educators as we continue to implement new reforms as part of our District's strategic plan as well as state and federal reforms."
