Friday Night Lights Turn On at Wooster High School
What: For the first time in nearly 50 years, football players at Wooster High School will be playing at night under stadium lights. The high school opened in the fall of 1962, which is the same year the first varsity football team was fielded. During the next 49 years, football squads have played only day games at the Wooster stadium as past attempts at installing lights were unsuccessful due to the school's proximity to the Reno/Tahoe International Airport and the technological capabilities of field lighting. New high tech stadium lighting that incorporates 'high cut-off, low trespass features' allowed Wooster to receive approval from the FAA and the Reno/Tahoe Airport Authority to build lights in the stadium. With support from the neighborhood advisory board and the WCSD Board of Trustees, Wooster began to fundraise the approximately $194,000 needed to purchase and install lights. No district funds were used in this project. With generous donations from the Nell J. Redfield Foundation, EL Cord Foundation, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, Wooster community donations, Wooster Booster fundraisers, Titan Electrical, and Silver State Boring, the goal was met. Night football kicks off at Wooster tonight!
