WCSD Students Read to Set a New Record

Reno, NV (Oct. 6, 2011) - More than 250 classrooms in the Washoe County School District on Thursday, Oct. 6 will join other students from around the country to read the same book for Read for the Record Day, a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about early childhood education and the importance of literacy.

As WCSD teachers pick up their copy of Llama Llama Red Pajama they and their students will be joining in the efforts to set new reading records - for the largest shared reading experience, and for the first time this year, the largest digital reading experience. The awareness campaign is sponsored by Jumpstart and the Pearson Foundation.

"The Pearson Foundation has generously donated a copy of Llama Llama Red Pajama to each participating classroom. We are extremely excited to have so many of our early childhood and early elementary teachers participating this year," WCSD Early Childhood Education program coordinator Peggy Pulver said. "Teaching our children to read at a young age is one of the most important things we can do. Reading gives our children a critical skill that helps them master many other subjects and be successful in the classroom. As we participate with other schools around the country by reading the same book on the same day, we are hoping to beat last year's record of 2,057,513."

Nevada First Lady Kathleen Sandoval will also participate in the reading events by visiting several schools in Northern Nevada. She will read with students in kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms at Roy Gomm Elementary, Desert Heights Elementary, Stead Elementary and Mariposa Academy.

"I am honored to participate in Read for the Record Day," Sandoval said. "Reading is an important component of life-long learning and I thank the Pearson Foundation for encouraging children in Nevada and states across our country to read Llama Llama Red Pajama today."

Presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation for the sixth consecutive year, Jumpstart's Read for the Record campaign shares the love of reading with millions of children and families while calling attention to the importance of early education. To date, more than seven million people have joined local Read for the Record reading celebrations; Jumpstart has raised more than $6 million to support its year-round work in preschools; and the Pearson Foundation has donated nearly one million books to local schools, libraries, and community organizations in conjunction with the annual campaign.
