Student Academic Growth Leads to Washoe County School District Making AYP
Reno, NV (Oct. 26, 2011) - Washoe County School District made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the 2010-2011 school year and has been removed from the watch list, according to official notification from the Nevada Department of Education.
WCSD presented data to the state education department citing substantive student growth and reducing the percent of students who scored below proficient as evidence for the designation of making AYP.
"We are pleased with the decision made by the Department of Education and appreciate their consideration. This decision now reflects the growth we are making in Washoe County schools with two consecutive years of gains on test scores and significant increases in our graduation rate, from 56 to 70 percent in just two years," Superintendent Heath Morrison said.
AYP is the federal accountability benchmark for schools. Under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, AYP is used to determine if schools are making sufficient progress toward educating students. NCLB requires states to use a single accountability system for public schools to determine whether all students, as well as individual subgroups of students, are making progress toward meeting state academic content standards.
Nevada AYP classifications are made annually and are based on the percentage of students tested (participation), the percentage of students who score at or above the proficient level on annual statewide tests (academic achievement), and another academic indicator (other indicator): school attendance or graduation rate.
