Family Night Event: Reading and literacy
Reno, NV (November 10 2011) -Sparks Middle School, in partnership with the 21st Century TEAM UP Program, will be hosting a Family Literacy Night on November 17th, 2011 from 5:30 - 7:00pm for the students and families of Sparks Middle School.
The event is one of several family nights hosted throughout the year at Sparks Middle School. "Parent Involvement is a part of the WCSD Strategic Plan and Sparks Middle School is being proactive in involving our families in the educational process of our students. We truly believe that by including our families in many school activities, students become more successful at school," says Principal Kevin Carroll.
Thursday's event is an excellent opportunity for families to connect with members of their school community. The night will start off with refreshments and a slideshow of previous family events and activities. This will be followed by a number of breakout sessions with topics including: literacy coaching for parents, a gang awareness presentation for adults and reading lessons for all ages. The event will also have a book exchange/giveaway and a raffle with prizes ranging from bikes to turkeys. This event is only open to students attending Sparks Middle School and their immediate family.
"Literacy is the foundation of all learning, therefore, we decided to have a family literacy night to align with our goals of increasing student achievement and to educate families on the importance of reading," says Principal Kevin Carroll. 21st Century coordinator and Sparks Middle School teacher, Vicky Hardy, agrees saying, "At a recent conference in San Diego, I was moved to learn that some families truly do not know the power of reading. They think of purchasing books as a luxury and often times choose other 'luxuries' to spend their money on. I hope that by educating as many families as we can, we can change the lives for some of these students."
WCSD TEAM UP provides engaging afterschool programming to 22 elementary and middle schools with over 3,300 students, 70 community partners, and 110 academic classes, 120 recreational and learning activities. It is an existing program that provides students in grades K-8 with an opportunity for additional learning times as well as extra enrichment activities. It is an opportunity for students and their families to continue to learn new skills and discover new abilities after the school day has ended. Programs are funded through grants, community contributions and partnerships. The primary funding source is from 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Grants.
