Vaughn's 55th Anniversary Concert to Showcase
Donated Instruments
Reno, NV (Dec. 7, 2011) - As Vaughn Middle School celebrates its 55th anniversary on Thursday evening with a concert, the school's music students will thank the community by playing the instruments donated to the music program during the last month.
Vaughn Principal Ginny Knowles says her school was "overwhelmed at the amazing response" after an article in the Reno Gazette-Journal on Nov. 2 highlighted the Vaughn Music Program and its need for instruments. Approximately one-third of all students at Vaughn participate in the band and strings programs at the school and Knowles said they were short on instruments.
As a result of the article, Vaughn received 31 instruments and approximately $5,700 in cash donations for its music program. Donated instruments include cellos, saxophones, trumpets, flutes, clarinets, a piccolo, and guitars.
"As a result of these donations, students are very proud and are working much harder to improve their skills. We are most appreciative of the community's involvement in the well-being of our students," Knowles said. "We are most honored that in such difficult financial times people would donate money to the fine arts. Research supports the fact that fine arts enriches the lives of our students and community, and the generosity of the community will provide support for our students in years to come."
