Superintendent Heath Morrison with Sierra Vista Students

I am extremely excited to present to you the new strategic plan that will shape the future of education in the Washoe County School District. The plan ‘Envision WCSD 2015 – Investing in Our Future’ puts the WCSD on the pathway of reform.

When we started the strategic planning process in February, we set out to learn what the District was doing well and where it needed to improve. We visited every school in Washoe County and talked with teachers, principals, and staff. We had hundreds of conversations with parents, businesses leaders, and other stakeholders in the community through committees and town hall meetings. In these forums, you made your opinions about the future of the district very clear: WCSD needs to change and the bar of success for our students must be set very high.

‘Envision WCSD 2015 – Investing in Our Future’ does just that. The five-year strategic plan details clear expectations for our employees and our students. It contains five goals based on student academic success, human capital development, family and community engagement, positive self-renewing culture, and performance management. The reform plan is ambitious and challenging, but it sets the right goals and is the right thing to do for our students.

Change can be daunting, but together, we will ensure our work reflects our very best efforts because we know this is what our children and community deserve.    Organizations often do things the same way because that’s the way it has always been done in the past. ‘Envision WCSD 2015 – Investing in Our Future’ is our ongoing commitment to challenge the status quo because it is no longer adequate for our children and their futures. It is a pledge to do what is right, even if it requires difficult change and presents great challenges.

Reform is needed now more than ever before. The economic vitality of Nevada depends on our children and the quality of education they receive. Right now, our low graduation rates and achievement gaps are unacceptable. This new strategic plan is the framework to make sure every child graduates from high school college and/or highly-skilled career ready. Northern Nevada must have an educated workforce to attract more diverse and stable businesses to stimulate and sustain our economy. This requires new and innovative partnerships among parents, businesses, the school district, and members of the community. Ensuring every child receives the highest quality education available is a shared responsibility and a collective investment by all of us in the future of our children and community.

As we begin our common journey down this road of reform, ‘Envision WCSD 2015 – Investing in Our Future’ is our pathway and commitment to “every child, by name and face, to graduation.”

Thank you,

Dr. Heath Morrison
