About WCSD Volunteer Services 

For the past nine years, under the leadership of Lisa-Marie Lightfoot, Volunteer Services has been coordinating community resources and supporting staff as they enrich the educational experience of all Washoe County School District students.  

Mission Statement: Providing safe, productive community volunteers and other resources for the academic support of all WCSD schools in a cooperative, efficient, and friendly manner.

Volunteer Services Fact Sheet

·         Currently, Volunteer Services recruits, screens and trains 570 volunteer academic tutors annually.

·         Volunteer Services coordinates screening and maintains long-term storage for over 12,000 district volunteer applications.

·         Annually, of those 12,000 screened, Volunteer Services does criminal history interviews and reports for approximately 100 potential volunteers with concerns for school/student safety.

·         Volunteer Services currently provides 30,000 incentive or take-home books every year. These are for students who are reading below grade level or struggling with their reading.

·         Volunteer Services solicits community book drives to support the provisioning of incentive/take-home books for WCSD schools.

·         Volunteer Services places and manages over 100 college student workers as academic support for WCSD.

·         Through Nevada State Welfare, Volunteer Services annually screens and places over 20 community workers in schools and district departments for up to 18 hours a week for 6 months a year.

·         Through AARP Foundation’s Senior Community Services Employment Program, Volunteer Services screens and places over 20 community workers in schools and departments annually, for up to 20 hours a week and 6 months to a year.

·         Volunteer Services was granted a federal VISTA program, providing four Volunteer Development Specialists to expand volunteer recruitment and placement with a focus on Hispanic bilingual resources.

·         Volunteer Services provides ongoing policy information to schools and the community on screening and volunteering at WCSD.
