Elmcrest Elementary School Parent Involvement Policy
2011-2012
The Administration, Teachers, and Staff of Elmcrest Elementary School are wholly dedicated to the further advancement of our students. We recognize that parent involvement is a key factor in achieving student success. In order to promote parent involvement at Elmcrest Elementary School we are committed to the following key factors for successful family, school and community partnerships:
Encouraging Family Participation: The staff at Elmcrest Elementary School will welcome, connect with, and reach out to our parents and families. We will ensure parents knowledge of their students’ learning environment and education. We will value and promote understanding within our staff of our parents’ diversity and provide reasonable support for parent involvement activities as requested by parents.
Efficient Communicating: Every effort will be made to increase communication between our staff and parents to ensure students have access to learning opportunities that will support student success. Elmcrest Elementary School will provide monthly and/or bi-monthly newsletters, classroom and school wide informational flyers, Infinite Campus, ConnectEd messages, meetings, conferences, school website, and home visits if possible. All forms of communication between parents and the school will be provided in a language the parents can understand, including alternative formats upon request. Parents will complete the Educational Involvement Accord (Parent-School Compact) provided in the student registration packet at the beginning of the school year, upon registration, and during Parent/ Teacher Conference Week. Elmcrest Elementary School will hold an Annual Title I Meeting during Conference Week, which parents will be encouraged to attend; at which time programs and services offered through Title I will be explained, parent input will be welcomed and there will be time made for questions and answers. In addition, we will provide parents with the academic and achievement standards, Nevada’s target proficiency level, alternate assessments, and school curriculum.
Empowering Parents: In order to promote student achievement, we will assist parents in understanding the Washoe County School District. We will involve parents and families in their children’s education through homework, activities at home designed to involve parents in their child’s education, our Parent Involvement Facilitator, and provide up to date information in Infinite Campus- Parent Portal. Elmcrest Elementary School will provide parents with classes developed for parents to help improve their understanding of their child’s education. These classes will include; Family Literacy Experience (FLITE)- a bilingual course that focuses on literacy, science and learning style, Math And Parent Partnerships (MAPPS)- a bilingual program that supports mathematical learning at home, and Parent School Partnerships (PSP)- a bilingual course that helps parents understand the school system.
Sharing Responsibilities: Elmcrest Elementary School will include parents and families in: school decision making, governance, advocacy through our Parent Involvement Facilitator, parent surveys, parent/ teacher organizations and committees, and implementation of a School Improvement Plan. We will also involve parents in the process of school review and improvement through our Parent Involvement Policy which will be reviewed and revised before each new school year by parents, teachers, and administrators. For this meeting we will provide flexible meeting times, transportation, child care, or home visits as applicable. Our school shall, with the assistance of parents, collaborate in finding ways to best reach out to, communicate with, and support families as equal partners in their children’s education, and to coordinate and sustain strong ties between parents and our school.
Promoting Collaboration: Elmcrest Elementary School shall, to the extent feasible, coordinate and integrate parent involvement programs and activities with Nevada State Parent Information and Resource Center (NVPIRC), Northwest Family Resource Center, Children’s Cabinet, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, public preschool, and other programs. The school will provide a parent resource and information center to support parents in more fully participating in the education of their child (ren). Elmcrest Elementary School will provide teachers and staff with information to promote the understanding of diverse families, cultures, and students with special needs through the Strategies, Research, and Perceptions (SRP) program. This program will improve our school’s culture of collaboration and partnership with parents.
