What in the world is happening
at Hug High School?
Procter R. Hug High School in Reno, Nevada is the
latest in a long string of high schools nationwide
to respond to the reality that comprehensive high
schools don’t work for most kids. Across the
United States high schools just like Hug are re-defining
themselves in an attempt to meet the needs of each
and every student on their campuses. Students from
poverty and minority students, statistically, are
still being “left behind” in far too
large of numbers.
During the 2004-05 school year, progressive staff
and community members under the facilitation of
Mr. Dick Withicomb began to ask the question of
function at Hug High School. How did the school
need to reorganize itself? How did the teachers
and students need to be grouped? How should the
school day look? All questions that if answered
correctly would start Hug moving in the right direction...that
of serving each of its’ students. (next
