Studies and experience show there is a strong relationship between poor attendance in the early grades and the likelihood that a student will later drop out of school. Conversely, it is well recognized that there is a high correlation between regular attendance, school success and achievement. Students are expected to be in school except in cases of illness or emergency. Steps to follow when your child is absent are:

  1. Please call the school at 353-5540 before 9:00 AM. We will need the child's name (teacher name helps us too) and the reason for the absence. A written note stating the reason for the absence should accompany the child upon return to school.
  2. We have an answering machine that will pick up if our office has not yet opened for the day. It is there for your convenience on absence calls.
  3. Absences that include illness, medical/dental appointments, and family illness are not calculated in the 90% attendance policy. Absences for reasons other than above are categorized as circumstantial and should be discussed and pre-arranged with the principal. Any absences beyond ten circumstantial change to domestic circumstance, which are deemed unexcused.
    • The WCSD attendance policy states:
"Students in Washoe County School District must be in attendance at least ninety percent (90%) of enrollment in order to be promoted to the next higher grade, or earn credit."
  4. Please do not ask teachers for make-up work in advance of the absence. Teachers will compile work missed for excused absences as the absences occur. Students will have the same number of days to complete the make-up work as the number of days absent.

Please help your child learn the value of being prompt. Tardiness or leaving early has a profound effect on student success in school. Missed Instruction is documented and recorded on student report cards. If you are having trouble with attendance, please call us and we will work together to solve the problem.

A delayed start schedule will be used when it appears that an extra hour of time will allow road crews to better clear roads and highways of snow and ice making travel safer. This extra hour will, in many cases, make the difference in being able to hold classes. (In extreme cases a two hour delayed start may occur)

Delayed starts are announced on your radio and local television news broadcasts beginning as early as 6:00 AM. Once announced, all Washoe County School District schools (K-12) will begin one hour later than their usual starting time. Dismissal at each school will remain at the regular time.

School buses will run one hour later than usual. Before school latchkey programs will be canceled. All before school activities are canceled including parent conferences, IEP meetings, and choir practice. Students may not arrive before 9:45 AM, on a delayed start, as that will be the first time supervision is available.

Dress appropriately for inclement weather: boots, jacket, hat, gloves, etc. Students are expected to go out to recess unless severe weather conditions exist. If your child needs to remain indoors during winter cold weather we can make arrangements. Please contact the school for assistance.

Getting soaking wet on purpose is inappropriate behavior. (Ex. Sliding in water, splashing in puddles, standing under the roof runoff, etc.)

School is a child's place of business and children who dress appropriately seem to be more successful in school. We consider appropriate dress to be clothing that is comfortable and suited for class time as well as recess. Items we consider inappropriate include: floppy sandals, tank tops/spaghetti straps, mesh tops, bathing suits, and shorts/shirts that are "too short". We also ask that children not wear clothing that displays inappropriate words or pictures. (Tobacco, alcohol, etc.) Many of our staff and students enjoy wearing our school shirts on Fridays for a weekly School Spirit Day. (Juniper t-shirts are available to be purchased - check with the office)

Excessive make-up will be asked to be removed and bright colors of hair (bright red, blue, green, etc.) will be asked to be washed out. The principal will notify parents if these or other issues arise in order to keep distractions to a minimum and the focus on education.

All clothing, lunch boxes and backpacks should be clearly labeled with your child's name. There is a lost and found area in our multipurpose room. Please do not allow your child to bring toys to school. Personal items can be stolen or broken and we do not have the resources to replace these items.

No student shall have beepers, headphones with radio/CD, other non-educational related devices on our school campus without prior permission from the principal. (Long bus trips are an exemption for headphones with radio/CD with teacher's approval) All cell phone use is restricted to before or after school. Cell phone or text messaging during school will result in loss of the cell phone, which will be returned to a parent or guardian.

One of the most important lessons we teach our children is to behave responsibly. Referred to most often in school as good citizenship, proper student behavior is a necessity for success in school. Consequences for inappropriate behavior can vary: phone call to parent, loss of recess or class privilege, required conference with principal or suspension. Parent support in the area of discipline is critical to our ability to provide a safe and orderly environment conducive to learning. These rights exist for all members of our school community:

  1. I have the right to be safe. MAKE GOOD DECISIONS
    • As a student I have the right to be free from fear or intimidation, to have adult supervision, to have a school campus free of broken or damaged equipment, to be able to freely express ideas and questions without ridicule, and to be free from actions of a harmful nature.
  2. I have the right to learn. BE A PROBLEM SOLVER
    • As a student I will listen and follow directions, respect the learning environment and try my best to learn, my behaviors will allow others to learn, and my behaviors will allow the teacher to teach.
  3. I have the right to be treated with respect. BE RESPECTFUL
    • Everyone will be respectful to others: As a student, I will have a good attitude, use appropriate language, never push, hit, kick, or throw objects or engage in other harmful acts. I will control my body language, gestures or other non-verbal messages and maintain a positive interaction with others. I have the right to be free from harassment.

Our number one charge is to provide a safe and orderly environment for our students, staff, and visitors. Teachers review school rules and policies with students throughout the year and develop classroom rules and policies that allow children to work productively in class. As a school, we practice for the unthinkable so that staff and students know what to do in an emergency. Fire drills, shelter-in-place drills, code blue (medical) and code red (danger on campus) are all a part of our master safety plan. School safety also includes teaching students some basic rules to keep our campus safe for all. Please review the following rules and policies with your child (We will too!) so that all may safely enjoy their days at Juniper.

  1. Skateboards, roller-skates, and roller blades are not allowed on campus. (They are also expensive items that should be kept at home to ensure they are not stolen.)
  2. Bicycles and scooters must be walked - not ridden - while on campus. Once a student has walked a bike to the rack, please provide a good quality bike lock for your child.
  3. All students are to walk when near or between the buildings. Running while in-between the buildings is extremely dangerous. The yellow half-circles are to remind children of where doors can swing open.
  4. All visitors must check in at the office. We ask that you not send your middle or high school students to pick up elementary age children. If this is a family necessity, please contact the principal so that special arrangements can be made. This policy is for the safety of all our students.
