What is National School Lunch Week?
"Our Nutrition Services Department has worked diligently to meet and exceed state and federal nutrition guidelines for healthy meals and to promote health and wellness by creating healthy new recipes and adding more fruits and vegetables to the menus. When children are hungry, they have trouble succeeding in school, and I want to thank our Nutrition Services employees for their dedication to keeping our students well-nourished during their school day." -Pedro Martinez, Superintendent
Let’s Grow Healthy! National School Lunch Week is October 15-19 and this year’s theme, “School Lunch—What's Cooking?,” is about celebrating the positive changes that have been made in school lunch programs across the country. Schools nationwide have been cooking up all sorts of exciting programs and plans, and by participating in NSLW, you can showcase your accomplishments and educate your community about the importance of healthy school lunches.
Serving nearly 31 million children every school day, the federally funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced low-cost and free meals to students. The program requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards. A school lunch tray always has age-appropriate portions and includes a healthy balance of fruits and vegetables, grains, protein and milk. Encourage your children to fill their lunch trays (and then eat!) following the MyPlate guidelines:
- Make half your plate/lunch tray fruits and vegetables.
- Make at least half your grains whole grains.
- Switch to fat-free or lowfat (1%) milk
