Helping Teachers and Staff to Engage Parents

The following are best practices and resources for helping staff to outreach and work with families, especially families of diverse backgrounds that are considered 'hard to reach' and may not be visible or feel welcomed at the school.  When thinking about implementing practices under this category, ask yourself how your staff can build their skills and knowledge of how to outreach and work with all parents.

Contact the following schools for more information on best practices to Help Teachers and Staff Engage Parents:

Positive Home Visits- Vaughn Middle School, Traner Middle School and Hug High School - all three schools use the Parent Teacher Home Visit model from Sacramento

Professional Development on Diversity - Sepulveda Elementary

Staff Meeting Discussions - Corbett Elementary

The following are district, community and national resources for helping teachers and staff to engage with families:

Study Circles- a conversation between teachers, students and families about race, ethnicity and student achievement.  Contact the WCSD Diversity Office at 784-3437 for more information.

Strategies, Research & Perceptions - a beginning workshop for school staff on family engagement.  Contact the Nevada State Parent Information & Resource Center at the Education Alliance 353-5533 for more information.
