Total Solar Eclips Sunday May 20 - Watch Safely
Through the generosity of the Astronomical Society of Nevada, Jim Fahey and American Assay, we are able to distribute a FREE solar viewer to every 8th grade student this week. The total solar eclipse is on Sunday May 20 beginning at 5:15pm and lasting until about 7pm. Peak viewing of the “ring of fire” is from 6:28pm to 6:33pm. For additional information visit: http://www.eclipsereno.unr.edu/This solar viewer will also be useful to observe the transit of Venus on June 5th This rare event will not occur again until 2114! You can view an animation of this even at: http://online.wsj.com/video/B0A29B97-6FD9-47A6-BCF9-31F0B9FACFAC.html

Venus will appear as a small black dot as it crosses in front of the Sun Credit: Howard University Astronomical Observatory
Eye protection is needed to view this event. The transit begins when Venus creeps in front of the sun’s limb as seen from Earth. In the Americas the transit occurs on June 5, while the event occurs on June 6 for Europe and Asia. The total time it takes for Venus to cross from one edge of the sun to the other is 6 hours and 40 minutes.
Venus should be visible without any magnification, but you will need solar eclipse glasses, welder’s goggles, proper filters on telescopes, or paper to make a pinhole projection. Once again, as it was for the partial solar eclipse in the United States, the point of greatest contact will occur at about the time of sunset, which is approximately 8:30 p.m. CDT.
Use CAUTION with the viewers, it is NEVER safe to look at the sun without eye protection. These are events not to be missed. Please thank Jim when you see him again. Enjoy!
