Welcome back to a new year in the library!
We had a busy start with the Scholastic book fair open during the first two weeks of school. Thank you to all who shopped and supported our library. I apologize for the confusion with the dates; we had problems with the fair delivery. As always the proceeds will go towards library supplies as well as programs and books.
Our first event this school year is a visit by noted children’s author Mary Nethery on October 7th. Her book Two Bobbies received the Nevada Young Reader Award for 1011 among many other accolades, for more information please check out www.twobobbies.com. Nubs: the True Story of a Mutt, a Marine and a Miracle received the National Parenting Publication Gold Award, debuted at #4 on the New York Times Best Sellers list and was featured in People Magazine, Reader’s Digest and Publisher’s Weekly. Warner Brothers has optioned the book for a major motion picture, for more information please go to www.thestoryofnubs.com. Order forms for any of Mary Nethery’s books went home Wednesday, Sept. 21st and have to be returned by Monday, Sept. 26th in order to get books here in time for her visit. She will autograph each book for your child. I am excited about her visit to Pleasant Valley School and I hope your children are as well.
I look forward to sharing my love of books with your child this year.As we explore different genres of books and learn skills to read informational text with confidence I hope your child will take advantage of everything offered in our library.
Please feel free to stop by and take a look around. The library door is always open during school hours and I look forward to seeing you.

AR Tips from Mrs. Pirtle:
- Read the entire book before taking the test (not just the summary), as questions cover the entire story.
- Watching the movie or listening to the book on tape is not the intention here, it is about
the student reading the story and understanding it.- Choose a book at your reading level (use the 5 finger method: open the book in the middle,
start reading and for each word you don't understand raise a finger, when you reach 5 fingers, the book will be too hard to read and not
enjoyable)- Establish if the book is appropriate for you and remember, once you have taken a test on a book you will not be able to retake the
test for the duration of your time here at PVS.- The AR program is a valuable tool to assess student comprehension, it should not be a
competion about who has the most points or who can read at the higher grade level.
