SCHOOL ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
All Students arriving on campus need to enter the playground from the cafeteria side and walk around to the correct line or playground. No students (with the exception of siblings of kindergarten students should be entering or exiting through the kindergarten playground. Late students should come into the office for a tardy slip. Students should then proceed to class on their own.
Please drop-off and pick-up your students from their lines on the playground. This allows teachers the time needed for preparation for their instructional day. With your help we can model the Spanish Springs Expectations of respectfully entering and exiting the building from the assigned areas.

The WCSD has a policy of delaying the start of a school day by one hour or two hours if the weather leaves roads unsafe. In the event of a two hour delay, morning Kindergarten is cancelled.
You can tune into local TV news after 6:00 a.m., or call the parent hotline at 334-8373 and press #7 to find out if there is a Delayed Start. There will also be a banner posted at the corner of the school notifying of a Delayed Start.
During a Delayed start there will be NO personnel at the school to watch students. It is very important that you do not drop off your child until the new scheduled time.
We encourage volunteers at Washoe County School District and wish to thank you in advance for your support. For the safety of all children, WCSD has a volunteer screening policy. We appreciate your patience and compliance in keeping our schools safe.
All volunteers must complete a School Volunteer Application and submit to a picture ID check. IDs need to be official (driver's license, passport, etc.). A picture ID copy is attached to the School Volunteer Application. Applications are available at your school office or on the WCSD web page at www.washoe.k12.nv.us/community/volunteering Applications are turned in to the school office. Volunteers may begin volunteering immediately, once the volunteer application has been turned in to the school office. All applications are given a "Wants and Warrants" check.
If you are on an active "Wanted list" (register sex offender, terrorist list, etc.) or if you have an outstanding "Warrant For Arrest", YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO VOLUNTEER AT WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT.
Overnight Chaperones
If you wish to volunteer as an Overnight Chaperone on a field trip, you must be fingerprinted at least six (6) weeks in advance of the field trip date.
To be fingerprinted for overnight chaperoning, you must take the School Volunteer Application with the attached picture ID to the Fingerprint ID and Background Office. Fingerprinting personnel will give you a confirmation notice that you must return to your school staff person to be cleared for volunteering.
The Fingerprint ID and Background office is located at 425 E. Ninth Street in Reno (Cross streets are Valley Road and Evans Avenue, near the University of Nevada). The Fingerprint ID and Background (FIB) office is located in the back on the left side of the building. If you have problems locating the FIB office, go to the main entrance and ask the receptionist for the Fingerprint ID and Background office and someone will direct you).
Fingerprinting is available "Drop-In" from 8am-12pm and from 1pm-4 pm, every Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). If your time is limited, we recommend you schedule an appointment by calling the Fingerprint ID and Background (FIB) office at 775-325-2084 or email at fingerprint@washoe.k12.nv.us.
You may begin volunteering immediately after you have delivered your confirmation notice to the school staff - showing you have completed your fingerprinting requirement.
Volunteer Coaches
To be a Voluntary Coach, please contact Student Services at 775-348-0375. Volunteer Coaches must fulfill mandatory fingerprinting requirements and additional application requirements.
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a plan designed to foster a climate of cooperation, academic excellence, respect, and safety at Spanish Springs Elementary School. School wide and classroom expectations to promote logical consequences and positive reinforcement will continue to be implemented in order to teach students the skills and behaviors necessary to succeed now and in the future. Students, staff, and parents will be rewarded throughout the year with Otter Pops, prizes, and various items for showing off their great behavior.
Here are the top ten positive behavior tips!
- Remember 5 positives to 1 negative
- Set the stage for success, reward the effort
- Give clear, specific directions
- Stay calm, use a calm voice- Nagging gets you nowhere!
- Set reasonable limits- Avoid using “always” or “never”
- Be CONSISTENT! “Yes means Yes and No means No”
- Set the example- Actions speak louder than words
- Proactively anticipate situations
- Have patience- A little goes a long way
- Have fun and enjoy the ride!
The Spanish Springs Philosophy is to provide a challenging academic program in a safe nurturing environment. Classroom management is approached from a belief that teachers use skills/concepts to plan and maintain a learning environment in which students learn decision making skills needed to be responsible for their own learning and behavior. We believe in being proactive and that Positive Behavior Support works best. Students following the school-wide Otter Bes will be rewarded with individual Green Otter Shells and classroom Orange Otter Shells. Otter Shells can be exchanged for individual and classroom rewards. We have monthly Principal Award Luncheons to reward students who demonstrate outstanding citizenship and make positive Otter Be" choices.
Some ways you can earn individual Green Otter Shells: get caught doing something good, help others without being asked, pick up trash off the floor/campus without being asked, be polite by holding the door, saying please and thank you, wait your turn politely, turn in homework consistently, demonstrate exceptional academic classroom behavior, play appropriately and cooperatively during recess.
Each month students that exhibit the “Otter Be” expectations of responsibility, respect, safety, or kindness will be chosen by their teacher to have a special lunch with the principal and assistant principal. Students receive a Principal Lunch Award Certificate and other goodies as well as school wide recognition.
The staff at Spanish Springs School feels it is important to recognize those students who demonstrate strong academic and citizenship skills. Ribbons are awarded to students for the following accomplishments:
Principal’s List - Blue Ribbon1st 2nd Grade: All O’s in academics and citizenship.
3rd 6th Grade: All A’s in academics and citizenship.
Honor Roll - Red Ribbon
1st 2nd Grade: O’s and S’s but mostly O’s in academics and citizenship.
3rd 6th Grade: All A’s or B’s but mostly A’s in academics and citizenship.

WASHOE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT ATTENDANCE POLICY NOTICE
The Nevada Revised Statutes 392.122 is the basis for the WCSD Attendance Policy and Procedure 5113. NRS 392.122 states that the Board of Trustees shall establish a minimum attendance requirement for promotion to the next grade or earning credit. The WCSD Board of Trustees has established a policy requiring 90% attendance for promotion to the next grade or earning credit. The emphasis of the attendance policy is on the importance of keeping students in school and providing access to the curriculum. During the 2005 Legislature, NRS 392.122 was revised. Because of this change in statute, the WCSD Board of Trustees adopted a policy that considers a medical absence as an approved/excused absence if the student completes the make-up work.
The attendance policy is for all students at the elementary level, including kindergarten and first grade, and secondary level. There are some differences between the two levels because of the manner in which credit is earned at the secondary level. The major points of the policy are as follows:
Absences that do not count against the 90%.
- 10 Circumstance absences per year for elementary and middle school students or 5 Circumstance absences per each semester for high school students do not count if approved by the site administrator. Examples of these types of absences are:
- Religious
- Family business
- Pre-arranged
- Bereavement
- Legal
- Personal business
- Emergencies
- Medical absences do not count against the 90%. There are two types of codes for medical absences. One code designates a medical absence which has documentation provided by a health care professional. The other medical absence is coded to indicate that the parent/guardian has affirmed that the absence is of a medical nature. The school has the right to request a parent/guardian conference if medical absences become excessive and if there is no documentation of a health concern provided by a medical professional. It is extremely important that parents/guardians provide a note from a medical professional is available and always notify the school of an absence due to a medical reason.
It should be noted that parents/guardians must send a note or call the school regarding any absence. This must be done within three days after the student returns to school. Of course, calls or notes in advance are always appreciated. Pre-arranged absences must be requested at least 2 school days in advance of the absence and should be requested earlier than 2 days in advance if the absence is for an extended period of time.
There are certain types of absences that do count against the 90%.
- Any absence that is not verified by a parent/guardian within the three days after the student returns to school counts against the 90%
- Any Domestic absence counts against the 90%.
- A Domestic absence is any absence beyond the 10 (elementary/middle school) or 5 per semester (high school) Circumstance absences.
- Absences that are within the parents/guardians control also count as Domestic absences. Examples of these types of absences are:
- Staying home to care for siblings
- Didnt feel like coming to school
- Excessive transportation issues
- Sleeping in too late
At the elementary level, missed instruction is recorded when the student does not attend the entire A.M. or P.M. session, but does attend 2/3 of the session. At the elementary level, if a student attends less than 2/3 of the A.M. or P.M. session s/he will be recorded as absent. Make-up work must be provided for any absence, but it is the students responsibility to request the make-up work in advance or on the first day s/he returns to class. Because it is impossible to make-up some in-class assignments, coursework of a similar nature may be assigned. It is the students responsibility to turn in all make-up class work at the designated deadline. Failure to complete the make-up work within the designated deadline will result in no credit received for the make-up work. If your child has failed to meet the 90% requirement, you may ask for a review of the absences. Please note that in order for any absence to be considered for review, the make-up work must have been completed per District policy. The principal or his/her designee will review the absences and notify the parent/guardian of the decision. Students who attend less than 90% of the year or course will be retained or not earn credit.
If you have any questions regarding the attendance policy, contact your childs school. Attendance is a shared responsibility and concern of students and parents/guardians with the assistance and support of school staff and the community. Lets all work together to get our children in school and make every day count!

APPROPRIATE DRESS
We expect appropriate clothing at school at all times. This is defined as clothing that is suitable for the classroom, playground activities, and the weather conditions. Home and school must cooperate in the matter of dress. School is a childs place of business. Children who are dressed appropriately for a place of business, and for the weather, are able to better attend to the business of learning. Therefore, in order to promote an academic environment, and to provide for your childs safety on the playground, we strongly urge that your child be dressed appropriately.
INAPPROPRIATE DRESS
Any clothing or accessory that disturbs the learning process will not be acceptable for school wear. Clothing with inappropriate words or pictures, which includes references to drugs, sex, alcohol, tobacco, profanity, or discrimination toward others, or which is noticeably dirty or smelly is not acceptable. This includes pins and other paraphernalia which advertise controlled substances, of display inappropriate words or pictures or are derogatory to any ethnic group, or which intend to cause disruption of any school class or activity.
No artificial hair colors such as blue, pink, or green will be accepted. Also, no make up is allowed to be worn at school. Parents will be notified by phone or home note when problems occur. If the childs dress is such that the problem cannot be easily corrected for the day by school staff, parents will be called and asked to bring appropriate clothing.
Examples of Inappropriate Clothing:- Beachwear
- Swimsuits
- Running Shorts

FIELD TRIPS
Field trips are taken to enhance and expand the curriculum. Due to liability issues non-school age siblings are not allowed on field trips. Parents are encouraged to attend with their child. Siblings attending school should not miss instruction at their own grade level in order to attend a field trip aligned with another grade levels curriculum. All volunteers and chaperones must have a current, approved Volunteer form on file in the office. This form takes approximately two weeks for the WCSD to process, so please turn-in your form well ahead of any field trips. If it is an overnight field trip, all applicants must be fingerprinted. This takes about five to six weeks to process. For the safety of our children there are no exceptions to this rule. Volunteer applications are available in the main office, can be filled out at anytime during the year, and are good for one calendar year.
Spanish Springs Elementary School (SSES) provides opportunities for students to increase their academic achievement and model the Otter Bes of being responsible, respectful, safe, and kind on their journey to become college and career ready graduates of Washoe County School District.
