Special Education Mentors

Special Education mentors work with "job alike" novice teachers, usually from another school site.  They have taught special education for at least three years in the Washoe County School District, and possess effective classroom management skills and excellent interpersonal skills.  Special Education mentors meet at least every week for ½ hour with their novice teacher regarding lesson plans, classroom management, instruction, IEPs, etc. and provide ongoing support.  They complete the Special Education Collaborative Logs at every meeting and submit them to the Special Education Mentor Program office at the Brown Center.  These logs document their contact and time spent with the novice teacher.

Special Education Mentors have completed the Foundations of Mentoring training, and commit to attend further training such as Mentor Development Seminar, Cognitive Coaching, or Observation and Feedback Strategies.  (Note:  Special Education Mentors may have a choice of stipend or inservice credit.)
