The Washoe County School District is governed through the Policies of the Board of Trustees, Administrative Regulations and other governing documents. The Board of Trustees receives its legal authority under Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 386.

Document Definitions
Board Policy
Through the authority granted by the Nevada State Legislature, the Washoe County School District's Board of Trustees establishes the direction and structure of the District through Board Policy. Policies establish direction for the District; set the goals, assign authority, and establish controls that make school governance and management possible. Policies are the means by which the Trustees and the District are accountable to the public.
Administrative Regulations
Administrative Regulation are detailed directions developed by the Superintendent, and/or his/her designee, to put policy into practice. Administrative regulations tell how, by whom, where and when things things are to be done. They assign policy implementation details to staff, and provide detailed requirements, procedures and prohibitions under which the District will operate.
Administrative Procedures
Administrative Procedure are broken into two categories - some serve in the same way as Administrative Regulations; others are Desktop Procedures which describe in detail each basic task and process needed to accomplish a specific job effectively and accurately. Desktop Procedures assure consistency of task performance and make employees accountable for reliable results.

Other governing documents include manuals, work instructions, forms, lists, and guidelines.

The Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS) are the current codified laws of the State of Nevada.
The Nevada Administrative Code (NAC) is the codified, administrative regulations of the Executive Branch.

Board Policy Review
Periodically the Board of Trustees reviews a board policy for addition, deletion or revision. Once the Board of Trustees gives the document preliminary approval, the document will be posted to the District's Public Document Review page for a 15-day public review.
