Reminder to Parents...5TH GRADERS WILL BE TAKING THE NV WRITING ASSESSMENT TESTS BEGINNING MONDAY, JANUARY 30 THRU FEBRUARY 3, 2012. PLEASE HELP YOUR STUDENT BY GETTING A GOOD NIGHTS SLEEP, A GOOD BREAKFAST AND A BIG HUG EACH MORNING!

Reading Week ...Verdi's annual Reading Week will be February 6th thru February 10, 2012. Please ask your child for flyer with listing each day's activities.

Fundraiser...Over the Holiday break, Verdi Mining and Pizza Co. held a Christmas Eve dinner for the public. They raised and donated $400 to the Verdi School Education Fund. Stop by the Verdi Mining Co. for some yummy wings and pizza and feel free to give them big Thanks!

On December 6, 2011 Verdi families enjoyed dinner at the local El Pollo Loco restaurant. We raised $252 for the PFA.

Box Tops October submission raised $422. Keep collecting those tops!

Thank you Students ...The 6th graders performed 48 hours of service during the 3 weeks that our students attended school in December.

5th Graders Rock ...Two students, Alex Juarez and Morgan Gutierrez-Sanders, in Mrs. Clark's classroom, won an essay contest in which they wrote a letter to Peter Pan describing why they would be a good friend. The contest was aligned to the new common core standards of opinion writing using text to support an opinion. This essay was put on through WCSD and the El Dorado. The students went on stage at the El Dorado's showing of Peter Pan. Way to go Alex and Morgan!

PFA News ...If you have any suggestions, comments or questions on the PFA's role, please plan to attend. If you are unable to attend the PFA meetings you can read the minutes from the meetings which have been posted on the Verdi Elementary School website www.washoecountyschools.org/verdi/pfa.html.

FEBRUARY PFA MEETING: The next PFA meeting will be Tuesday, February 7th at 3:30 pm. Babysitting will be provided. At this meeting, we will be reviewing the budget and ratifying it with a prioritized list of how the money is spent for the rest of the year.

Upcoming Events...

FUN RUN 2012

The 21st annual Verdi Elementary School Fun Run will be Friday, May 18, 2012. All students are invited to participate in designing our 2012 Fun Run t-shirt. All artwork entries must be turned into the office no later than Friday, March 2, 2012 (late entries will not be considered). All students will receive a t-shirt the day of the Fun Run for their participation and efforts. More information will follow soon! FYI: We ask our students to seek pledges from friends and relatives to sponsor them (with a donation to our school) for participating in the Fun Run. This packed will be sent out in April.

PARENTS: If your business or the company you work for would like to be a "Corporate Sponsor" and have their business name & logo appear on the back of the Fun Run t-shirt, please contact Jennifer Cannell at 530-479-0111 or jcannellpyle@yahoo.com. Extra t-shirts may be purchased for adults and/or siblings.

Sexual Health and Reproductive Education will be offered to all 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in May. Please feel free to attend a preview night Tuesday, February 7th from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Sierra Vista Elementary School. Adults Only. No Childcare provided.
