The first half of the year has flown by! Thank you to staff, parents and students for all your hard work and dedication! It has paid off! As you are probably aware the Performance Summaries have been released on all WCSD schools. Verdi Elementary was ranked a 5 star which is the highest ranking. It takes a village! If you would like to view the report you can find it on the Verdi website or at WCSD website.

Balanced Calendar...The new school year calendar for 2013-2014 has been officially approved (see attached). You may also view this calendar on the website at www.washoe.k12.nv.us/schools/school-year-calendars/ . Please take the time to review this calendar as there are many changes. The first change you will want to take notice is the first day of school for next year will be Monday August 12, 2013. Should you have any questions regarding the calendar, please feel free to call us at the office.

6th grade...Monthly Food Drive. Thank you to everyone who donated peanut butter in January for our 6th grade food drive. For the month of February we will be collecting soup. Please help out by donating a can or two of soup. Each classroom has a collection box that the 6th graders will collect at the end of the month.

For the month of December, our 6th graders performed 77.25 community work hours! Way to go 6th Grade :)

Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows ...Come for a free visit and check out the Boys and Girls Club here at Verdi Elementary. 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Benefits of your child joining the Boys and Girls club include: Tutoring and homework help, computer use, art programs, leadership activities, games and creative play, health and life skills programs, sports leagues and free afternoon snack. Chess Club ...Do you like to play chess? Verdi Elementary has a chess club every Tuesday afternoon from 3:20 to 4:20 and we can use your help. We currently have a parent that volunteers their time, however, having another person to help out would be wonderful. Please give us a call if you would like to help.

Bingo Night ...Thank you to everyone who came out last Tuesday evening and played bingo with us. The cafeteria was packed and we had a great time! There were many prizes won and lots of happy faces! :)

PFA Meeting ...Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 12th at 3:20 here at the school. As always we invite all our parents to come to our meetings so you can learn more about your child's school, get involved with the many school functions and perhaps meet a new friend :)!

Conscious Discipline...The next conscious discipline meeting for parents will be Wednesday, February 13th at 6:00 p.m. The next class will be on Positive Intent.

Reading Week ...Tuesday February 19th - Friday February 22nd is reading week. This year's reading week theme is "Read It! Dream It! Do It!" Local author David Michael Slater will be our guest author on Friday February 22nd. An order form for David Michael Slater's books will be sent home prior to reading week. David Michael Slater will also have books available to be purchased on Friday February 22nd. David Michael Slater will have a book signing on Friday February 22nd as well.

The PFA will provide a FREE pizza lunch to all of the students on Tuesday February 19th to kick off Reading Week. Please bring a lunch only if you don't like pizza.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be in room 121 from Friday February 15th - Thursday February 21st. The Book Fair will be open before, during, and after school (8:30-3:30).

Dinner Out Fundraiser...Our next scheduled dinner out with the Verdi Family will be Tuesday, February 26th at Abel's Mexican restaurant. Abel has been an awesome supporter of the Verdi School so let's thank him in return and join us for dinner on the 26th.
