September Newsletter

Welcome Back! We are very excited about the 2012-2013 school year! We had a very smooth first week and are excited to have our kindergarten students join us! We welcome several new staff members this year; Kristie Martin and Kerry Hansford in Kindergarten, Carolyn Miller-Lopez and Maricela Gutierrez Rodriguez in our Strategies classroom. We will be implementing "Conscious Discipiline" school wide this year and invite parents to take the training as well. We will give specifics of this at Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 5th. As always, we have an "open door" policy, so do not hesitate to contact the office or myself if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night... Mrs. Geil

Back to School Night...Plan to come to our Back to School Night Wednesday, September 5th at 6:00 p.m. Please report to the Multi-Purpose Room with Mrs. Geil. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate children on this date so the evening will be Parents Only. Please be sure to take the time to stop by our PFA table to look at the many activities and events taking place this year at Verdi. Plan to volunteer a few hours of your time to one of these events. It is very important that we show our children the importance of giving back to our school and community.

PFA PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT STILL NEEDED FOR 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR...The PFA is looking for parents to fill the positions of President and Vice-President for the 2012-2013 school year. We would love to have you. Please contact Julie in the school office or call at 345-8100.

PARENT FACULTY ASSOCIATION (PFA) ...Our first meeting will be Tuesday, September 11th at 3:30 pm. Babysitting will be provided. We are encouraging every family to join the PFA for a $10.00 donation. Membership forms will be sent home with the students and also are available in the office and on the school website www.washoecountyschools.org/verdi/pfa.html. We are looking for volunteers to be on different committees that will enhance our school. Please come and support our school. We are hoping for 100% participation/involvement.

Upcoming Events...

Cookie Dough...It's that time of year again when our 6th graders begin selling cookie dough for their May Sierra Outdoor School camp. There are all kinds of wonderful items and flavors for sell. Sells begin Thursday, August 30th thru Friday, September 14th. See a 6th grader or stop by the office to place your order.

October 14th: Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival 10-4

CRAFTERS...If you know someone who is a crafter/vendor and would like to show off their wares, the Pumpkin Patch (Sunday, October 14, 2012 from 10 am to 4 pm) is a great way to do this. Have them contact Julie in the school office at 345-8100 or Cara Pitchford at carapitchford@yahoo.com.

SPIRIT WEAR ...This year's Verdi Spirit Wear is being offered through Blue 84 Spirit. The school's Spirit Wear Sale runs from Tuesday, September 4 through Friday, September 21. Order forms will be sent home with the students and are available in the office. Purchase this year's Spirit Wear by completing an order form and returning it and your payment to the office by September 21st, or you can visit our school's store website at www.blue84spirit.com/NV665 for more Spirit Wear products and to order and pay by credit card.

ABEL'S MEXICAN RESTAURANT FUNDRAISER DINNER ...Tuesday, September 18th from 4 pm to 9 pm. Abel's will donate 20% of the entire proceeds of September 18th to Verdi Elementary School. The flyer will be sent home the week prior to the fundraiser night. The flyer is also posted on the school website in case you need to print more out for family and friends.

School Newsletters / E-Mails ...If you would like to receive Verdi Elementary School's monthly newsletter via e-mail, as well as receive other e-mails from school, please e-mail Madeleine Palmer at verdinewsletter@m2pdesign.com and let her know.

Verdi Library ...The public hours at the Verdi Community Library are Wednesday 3pm-7pm and Saturday 10am-4pm. Please remember that children are charged a 10 cent fine for every day library materials are overdue and adults are charged a 25 cent fine for every day library materials are overdue. Starting Monday September 10th patrons will be charged a $1.00 fee for unclaimed library material that they have placed on hold. Please remember to pick up your holds.

Lunch Money...Don't forget you may now pay your child's lunch money online at the Washoe County School District website. Simply click on the Parent tab and you will see the label for paying online. It's that easy. No more sending checks or money to school.

Supplies Needed...Part of our 6th graders community service will be providing babysitting service for our many events and meetings here at the school. If you have any board games, cards, art, puzzles etc. that you would like to donate to our babysitting group please drop them by the office.
